The VM-A002 micro Digital Video Recorder (mDVR) is one of the world's smallest single-board multimedia player/recorders.  The highly integrated system can operate as a stand-alone system or as an embedded application in a larger development.  A rich set of interfaces complement the primary MPEG4 video recording / playback operation.  The system may operate on analog or digital video input and output sources.

Primary features of the system include a removable microSD card for multiple hours of video recording.  A multimedia playback system includes thumbnail views and full video, still image and audio review.

As a stand-alone system the mDVR is enabled with an LCD interface, user buttons and GUI application that may be customized.  The stand-alone operation also includes power supply options that enable Lithium Ion battery, DC input or USB power inputs.

As an embedded system the mDVR has a full set of commands available to enable remote control of the system with a microcontroller.  These commands can replace all GUI layers if desired.  These command set includes smart power controls which enable selective operation of the subsystem when in remote use.

Architecture

The mDVR is a highly integrated single-board media computer.  Its core combines an advanced multimedia processor, on board 32MB of DDR SDRAM, and removable media storage.  The system has a large number of advanced software features that make its use as embedded or stand alone elegant.

The system may optionally use either analog or digital video as an input source.  NTSC / PAL compliant analog video can be used through the on board video preprocessor.  Digital video compliant to ITU-R BT.656 can also be used as an option, either in interlaced or progressive scan modes.

Typical video capture is done efficiently with memory filling at a typical rate of about 1GB / hour.  SD card size choice enables capacity options.

The system has many interface features, designed to accomplish a wide range of potential systems tasks.  Commands to control record, playback, user options and power modes are available in button form or via remote control interfaces.  Some customization of GUI, user buttons, display options, camera input source and remote commands is also available through VisionMOS consulting services.

System Use

Ideal use of the mDVR is as a portable consumer electronic media recorder.  The system could easily be adapted as an in-line recording system of live video, or as a playback source for pre-recorded material.  As delivered, the system has a graphical user interface, user buttons and set of features including video recording, thumbnail file selection, and image playback.  A number of control options are possible, and may be customized for a specific system use.

The mDVR may be used as a subsystem within a larger device.  In this use, remote instructions can be used for all GUI inputs, and feedback is available to assist with system handshaking.  Data can also be presented in a remote fashion through the digital video port.  All interfaces in this case can be made to the system via flexible connection points, which aid in mechanical system configuration.

The mDVR has been adapted by customers into existing camera functions including digital binoculars, security systems, vehicle control and other military COTS and industrial systems.
