Return to Product Overview
The VM-A013 Advanced micro Digital Video Recorder (mDVR3)
has extended the leading line of the world's smallest single-board multimedia player / recorders.
30% smaller than the previous generation, the highly integrated system can operate as a stand-alone system or as an
embedded application in a larger development. A rich set of interfaces
complement the primary MPEG4 video recording / playback operation. The
system
may
operate on analog NTSC or PAL input and output sources.
Primary features of the system include a removable microSD (up to 32GB) card for multiple
hours of video recording. A multimedia playback system includes thumbnail
views and full video, still image and audio review.
As an embedded system the mDVR3 has a full set of commands available to
enable remote control of the system with a microcontroller. These
commands can replace all GUI layers if desired. The command set
includes smart power controls, record, playback, and system setup which
enable selective operation of the subsystem when a controller is used.
As a stand-alone system the mDVR3 is enabled by user
buttons and a GUI application that may be customized. The stand-alone
operation also includes power supply options that enable Lithium Ion
battery, DC input or USB power inputs.
Advanced features of the mDVR3 include the
ability to trigger on observed video movement, and capture still image or
video (for a selected time) based on that observation. The system also
allows for user defined overlays including text and objects that may be
recorded.

Architecture
The mDVR3 is a highly integrated single-board media computer, and continues
most legacy compatibility with other systems in the mDVR family. Its core
combines an advanced multimedia processor, on board 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM, and
removable media storage. The system has a large number of advanced software
features that make its use as embedded or stand alone elegant.
The system may optionally use either analog NTSC
or PAL video sources. The system also projects output to the same type
of video source, which includes preview during recording, playback of
captured video, and menu GUI information.
Typical video capture is done efficiently with memory filling at a typical
rate of about 1GB / hour, with advanced user settings able to change
recording ratio and quality options. SD card size choice enables capacity options.
The system has many interface features, designed to accomplish a wide range
of potential systems tasks. Commands to control record, playback, user
options and power modes are available in button form or via remote control
interfaces. Some customization of GUI, user buttons, display options,
camera input source and remote commands is also available through VisionMOS
consulting services.
System Use
Ideal use of the mDVR3 is as a portable consumer electronic media recorder.
The system could easily be adapted as an in-line recording system of live
video, or as a playback source for pre-recorded material. As delivered, the
system has a graphical user interface, user buttons and set of features
including video recording, thumbnail file selection, and image playback. A
number of control options are possible, and may be customized for a specific
system use.
The mDVR3 may be used as a subsystem within a larger device. In this use,
remote UART instructions can be used for all GUI inputs, and feedback is
available to assist with system handshaking. All interfaces in this
case can be made to the system via flexible connection points, which aid in
mechanical system configuration.
The mDVR family has been adapted by customers into existing camera functions
including digital binoculars, security systems, vehicle control and other
military COTS and industrial systems.
Availability
The mDVR3 platform can be customized by VisionMOS to meet your needs, or is
available off the shelf in a number of standard configurations. The mDVR3 is
in production now.
